Útdráttur

Emj, grenj, and hljóðasvelj. A short samanhypj.

Keywords: Icelandic morphology, neuters, inflection of nouns, morphophonemics, semantics, pragmatics

This article deals with words of the same type as emj, grenj, defined as action nouns derivable from the infinitive by the truncation of -a. Such words are rare in written sources, the earliest examples dating from the 17th century. Due to the semantics and register of the words, they are hardly to be expected in literary sources, and thus the formation could be much older. The sources concur in showing the words semantically as onomatopoeic formations denoting noise or mischievous activity bound to certain contexts. It comes as no surprise that words of this type are more frequent in some types of Internet Icelandic.
