Grammaticć islandicć rudimenta. Íslensk málfrćđibók frá 17. öld
ÚtdrátturThe subject of the paper is the oldest grammar of Icelandic, Grammaticæ Islandicæ rudimenta, written by Runólfur Jónsson and published in the year 1651. The first part deals with the life of Runólfur and the opinions of his contemporaries and later scholars about his grammar. In the second and main part the grammar itself is discussed. Runólfur's work is primarily concerned with the inflection of nouns and verbs. He distinguishes four declensional classes of nouns, putting special emphasis on the last letter of the word in nom. sing., and five conjugational classes of verbs, depending on the inflectional endings in singular. This classification is unacceptable by modern standards, but the book contains a wealth of examples that are of great value for investigations of the history of the Icelandic language. | ||||
